Paracellular Transmigration of Toxoplasma across biological barriers (»Add to Infobox)

Barragan Antonio, Associate Professor

Center for Infectious Medicine

We are exploring the hypothesis that active invasion is also used for tissue migration and dissemination of Toxoplasma infections in vivo to distant sites such as the CNS, the retina and the placenta where disease is most acute. We have recently found that that in the process of migration Toxoplasma uses a paracellular pathway to transmigrate across biological barriers mediated by a tightly regulated interaction between the secreted parasite adhesin MIC2 and the host cell receptor ICAM-1.
