Genetic determinants of virulence during Toxoplasmosis
(»Add to Infobox)
Dramatic differences in acute virulence between parasite strains exist in nature, yet little is known about the underlying biological or genetic factors that mediate these differences. Using quantitative genetic linkage mapping we have shown that acute virulence in Toxoplasma gondii is strongly associated with a single locus on chromosome VIIa. This same genomic region contains parasite gene(s) that confer enhanced migration in vivo. The elucidation of determinants involved in the process of migration may reveal virulence factors and novel therapeutic targets to combat disease cause by apicomplexan parasites.
